VW Factory Museum
The VW factory museum is NOT located on the factory
grounds. It is within walking distance, though and is located at:
AutoMuseum Wolfsburg
Dieselstrasse 35
3180 Wolfsburg 1
Tel. 053 61/5 20 71
Find the main street in front of the train station and walk along it away
from the factory. A few blocks past the overpass is the museum.
Entry into the museum is DM 3.00 (currently about $0.70/DM). There is a
small gift shop with a slightly larger and slightly more expensive
collection that the factory shop. Credit cards are not accepted. Hours are
from 10:00 to 17:00 daily, although it is closed from 24Dec to 1Jan.
Inside the museum are a 1934 Bug prototype, a 1936 Bug, the 1,000,000th
Wolfsburg Bug, the 20,000,000th Wolfsburg Bug, the last Wolfsburg Bug, some
bugs from Ireland, South Africa, and Mexico, Herbie the Love Bug, a
Schwimmwagen, a few Type IIs, a gorgeous type 34 (type 3 Karmann Ghia), some
nice type 3 prototypes, and much more. Some of my favorites can be seen
below. Click on each picture for a bigger image.
Items for sale included:
- Almost everything at the factory at slightly higher prices
- Gummy Bugs: 3.0DM
- VW Umbrellas: 15 - 25 DM
- Replica Vintage Postcards: 0.75DM
- Lots of Bugs, Type II, and water-pumper cars: ~15DM and up
- A noticeable lack of Karmann Ghias and Type III cars.
- I think I saw a catalog for 10DM, but I didn't see any other books.

OK, so this
isn't a museum piece, but it could be! My '56 oval sunroof.
